Most of them work from home as I said, so there's no direct supervision, and I would get complaints from customers that when they were dealing with a OMNI consultant, they could hear background noises from their house or dogs barking, making it really distracting for the customers who are trying to purchase cars.ĭue to also the demand for used cars this year, Carmax has been pumping out vehicles from auction with little to no inspection done. Due to Covid, they did a mass hiring and shortend training to get them out. A majority of these consultants haven't sold cars before (not that it matters), but more importantly haven't worked for Carmax before either. Those consultants now during covid work from home. Carmax has 4 mega stores that is just packed with thousands of sales consultants that field all the phone calls in the nation. I always felt that Carmax had their employees back. If they asked me that question now? It would be a no without hesitation. There's a survey they give associates to fill out and one of those questions is, 'If you would recommend Carmax as a place to work to your friends and family'. I was thinking of making this place a career and not a 'job'. No one stole customers, and people even helped for free (no splits). On the store level, I loved my team and my peers. Don't get me wrong, there are some deals that drag because of people with sub prime credit and they can't prove income or never had an address in their name, so you would have to work with the customer on finding ways to make the deal roll, but for the most part my deals went smoothly. I was okay with that because I appreciate my days off. Carmax doesn't pay hourly if you made more in commission but would pay any overtime accumulated. Just to break down the pay, if you only sold 20 units with warranty, you would gross $7100 just on units alone. On top of that, you would also get paid if a customer sold their car to Carmax, 50 bucks. Prior to the OMNI roll out, a car with warranty would be $355 per car. I never really worked more than 45 hours a week. If it was an up customer, I would average 2 hours or so with them. I would have customers in and out within 1 hour if I had them as an internet lead as I was writing up most of the transaction so that I would just need to verify stipulations when they come in and hit print. I was okay with that because of the process that Carmax had set up. Carmax sales consultants in comparison to other associates in the traditional car sales are paid significantly less. It had fantastic benefits, such as 6% employer match for 401k, paid vacation, sick hours, personal days and paid holidays. As long as you follow the process you could've sold 15 easy. With that being said, the training is more than enough to make you successful.

Majority of our top sales actually aren't car experts. I don't know anything about cars, in fact I couldn't care less about cars.

I averaged roughly 22 units per month with my highest month being 31.5. I came from luxury retail sales and transitioned into the used car career, so I did have 10 years of sales experience, but the training that Carmax offers is great. This is going to be a somewhat long post, but I want to share my experience for any green peas thinking of becoming a sales consultant with the roll out of OMNI.
